My So-Called Mock Draft

I had a thing for Claire Danes back in the day. Well, specifically when she starred in the show “My So-Called Life”. She wasn’t the most beautiful girl I had ever seen, not by a long-shot, but she was cute and I couldn’t help but find an attraction to her character. There were always issues on that show, problems to sort through, obstacles to climb.

I’m really making a stretch here by comparing what happened to our mock draft Sunday night to what happened in the T.V. series “My So-Called Life”, but I thought it made for a cool title.

Today was supposed to be the day that Andrew, Mark and I held a mock draft that would be published in our forthcoming free draft guide. I set everything up over at Mock draft Central and all participants were signed in before the start of the draft. Then, about eight picks in, time stood still…literally.

We had triggered some glitch in the draft room that caused the clock to stop at 1:24 on the current pick (the 9th, I think). So, after failed attempts to start-up the clock, I decided to just register another draft for 15 minutes later. However, the same problem occurred, which I believe stemmed from a last minute sign-in. Regardless, things didn’t work out at Mock Draft Central*, so we all tried as best we could to join a mock draft at Yahoo. Amidst all the confusion, our partner in crime–er, partner in freedom**–,Andrew, was left out due to an auto-drafter named “Santa”. Christmas come early? I think not.

*This is no slam on Mock Draft Central, though it is the first time I have used the service since Roto Wire took over. Their customer service is working on making things right as we speak.

**You will find out what this means soon enough.

Anyway, most of us made it and here are the results. I’ve made some small commentary on my picks, but keep in mind that I was preparing for C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, CI, MI, OF (4), UT, P (9) and got the Yahoo standard league with no CI or MI, three OF and two UT.

Round 1
(1) Santa – Albert Pujols (StL – 1B)
(2) Brett Talley – Hanley Ramírez (Fla – SS)
(3) Josh S – Miguel Cabrera (Det – 1B)
(4) Tyler – Troy Tulowitzki (Col – SS)
(5) Charlie – Evan Longoria (TB – 3B)
(6) George – Carl Crawford (Bos – OF)
(7) Brablc – Joey Votto (Cin – 1B)
(8) OCCH – Ryan Braun (Mil – OF)
(9) Dannn R – Carlos González (Col – OF)
(10) Mark S – Robinson Canó (NYY – 2B)
(11) RotoCommunity.com – David Wright (NYM – 3B)
(12) Dave – Chase Utley (Phi – 2B)

Love Longo here. Position scarcity and a good chance for .290/30/100

Round 2
(1) Dave – Prince Fielder (Mil – 1B)
(2) RotoCommunity.com – Adrián González (Bos – 1B)
(3) Mark S – Roy Halladay (Phi – SP)
(4) Dannn R – Álex Rodríguez (NYY – 3B)
(5) OCCH – Ryan Howard (Phi – 1B)
(6) Brablc – Félix Hernández (Sea – SP)
(7) George – Mark Teixeira (NYY – 1B)
(8) Charlie – Ryan Zimmerman (Was – 3B)
(9) Tyler – Josh Hamilton (Tex – OF)
(10) Josh S – José Reyes (NYM – SS)
(11) Brett Talley – Kevin Youkilis (Bos – 1B)
(12) Santa – Dustin Pedroia (Bos – 2B)

Love doubling up on a thin position, but I was still thinking CI at this point.

Round 3
(1) Santa – Matt Kemp (LAD – OF)
(2) Brett Talley – Matt Holliday (StL – OF)
(3) Josh S – Joe Mauer (Min – C)
(4) Tyler – Dan Uggla (Atl – 2B)
(5) Charlie – Ian Kinsler (Tex – 2B)
(6) George – José Bautista (Tor – 3B,OF)
(7) Brablc – Tim Lincecum (SF – SP)
(8) OCCH – Adam Wainwright (StL – SP)
(9) Dannn R – Víctor Martínez (Det – C,1B)
(10) Mark S – Shin-Soo Choo (Cle – OF)
(11) RotoCommunity.com – Jimmy Rollins (Phi – SS)
(12) Dave – Jason Heyward (Atl – OF)

This might be a stretch, but with no CI, MI and only 3 OF, I went ahead and got a top five 2B.

Round 4
(1) Dave – Adam Dunn (CWS – 1B)
(2) RotoCommunity.com – Jon Lester (Bos – SP)
(3) Mark S – Justin Morneau (Min – 1B)
(4) Dannn R – Cliff Lee (Phi – SP)
(5) OCCH – Clayton Kershaw (LAD – SP)
(6) Brablc – Justin Upton (Ari – OF)
(7) George – Andrew McCutchen (Pit – OF)
(8) Charlie – Francisco Liriano (Min – SP)
(9) Tyler – Buster Posey (SF – C,1B)
(10) Josh S – Rickie Weeks (Mil – 2B)
(11) Brett Talley – Ichiro Suzuki (Sea – OF)
(12) Santa – Nelson Cruz (Tex – OF)

I decided in this mock to take a pitcher earlier than normal, but I really wanted Jon Lester. Francisco Liriano was one of the most dominant pitchers in the game last season based on his peripheral numbers. He should have much better luck in 2011.

Round 5
(1) Santa – Zack Greinke (Mil – SP)
(2) Brett Talley – CC Sabathia (NYY – SP)
(3) Josh S – Jay Bruce (Cin – OF)
(4) Tyler – Adrián Béltre (Tex – 3B)
(5) Charlie – Kendry Morales (LAA – 1B)
(6) George – Derek Jeter (NYY – SS)
(7) Brablc – Brandon Phillips (Cin – 2B)
(8) OCCH – Hunter Pence (Hou – OF)
(9) Dannn R – Brian McCann (Atl – C)
(10) Mark S – Andre Ethier (LAD – OF)
(11) RotoCommunity.com – Josh Johnson (Fla – SP)
(12) Dave – Cole Hamels (Phi – SP)

Again, not wanting to reach for an OF yet, I filled in my 1B spot with Kendry Morales, who might not live up to 2009 standards, but he should still provide plenty of value in round five.

Round 6
(1) Dave – Mike Stanton (Fla – OF)
(2) RotoCommunity.com – Carlos Santana (Cle – C)
(3) Mark S – Justin Verlander (Det – SP)
(4) Dannn R – Chris Carpenter (StL – SP)
(5) OCCH – Mat Latos (SD – SP)
(6) Brablc – Álex Ríos (CWS – OF)
(7) George – Tommy Hanson (Atl – SP)
(8) Charlie – Alexei Ramírez (CWS – SS)
(9) Tyler – David Price (TB – SP)
(10) Josh S – Ubaldo Jiménez (Col – SP)
(11) Brett Talley – Jayson Werth (Was – OF)
(12) Santa – Billy Butler (KC – 1B)

I honestly don’t know why Sexy Alexei was my guy here. I know that I wanted to lock up a top-end SS, but I had Elvis Andrus ahead of Alexei on my rankings sheet. No matter, I’ll take the power/speed combo here.

Round 7
(1) Santa – Carlos Mármol (ChC – RP)
(2) Brett Talley – Jered Weaver (LAA – SP)
(3) Josh S – Pedro Alvarez (Pit – 3B)
(4) Tyler – Chris Young (Ari – OF)
(5) Charlie – Brian Wilson (SF – RP)
(6) George – Dan Haren (LAA – SP)
(7) Brablc – Drew Stubbs (Cin – OF)
(8) OCCH – Mark Reynolds (Bal – 3B)
(9) Dannn R – Matt Cain (SF – SP)
(10) Mark S – Martín Prado (Atl – 2B,3B)
(11) RotoCommunity.com – Yovani Gallardo (Mil – SP)
(12) Dave – Jacoby Ellsbury (Bos – OF)

In years past, I would have waited a lot longer to take my first reliever, but this could end up being the messiest season in recent memory for closer turnover. So, I lock up my number one ranked closer for 2011.

Round 8
(1) Dave – Aramis Ramírez (ChC – 3B)
(2) RotoCommunity.com – Paul Konerko (CWS – 1B)
(3) Mark S – Max Scherzer (Det – SP)
(4) Dannn R – Roy Oswalt (Phi – SP)
(5) OCCH – Stephen Drew (Ari – SS)
(6) Brablc – Joakim Soria (KC – RP)
(7) George – Shaun Marcum (Mil – SP)
(8) Charlie – Chad Billingsley (LAD – SP)
(9) Tyler – B.J. Upton (TB – OF)
(10) Josh S – Brett Anderson (Oak – SP)
(11) Brett Talley – Casey McGehee (Mil – 3B)
(12) Santa – Mariano Rivera (NYY – RP)

Still holding off on adding outfielders, I want an arm to compliment my ace, Francisco Liriano. Chad Billingsley fits that mold and fits it rather snugly (he has a big frame, you see).

Round 9
(1) Santa – Neftali Feliz (Tex – RP)
(2) Brett Talley – Shane Victorino (Phi – OF)
(3) Josh S – Brett Gardner (NYY – OF)
(4) Tyler – Michael Young (Tex – 3B)
(5) Charlie – Elvis Andrus (Tex – SS)
(6) George – Aaron Hill (Tor – 2B)
(7) Brablc – Corey Hart (Mil – OF)
(8) OCCH – Brandon Morrow (Tor – SP)
(9) Dannn R – Brian Roberts (Bal – 2B)
(10) Mark S – Heath Bell (SD – RP)
(11) RotoCommunity.com – Gordon Beckham (CWS – 2B)
(12) Dave – Geovany Soto (ChC – C)

I was looking to add some stolen bases to my lineup at this point, eying down the likes of Jacoby Ellsbury. However, that three-outfielder format is still making me hold off. You know what? I don’t care if I already have a shortstop. Elvis Andrus it is! Put him at the second utility spot and let him steal 35-45 bags!

Round 10
(1) Dave – Curtis Granderson (NYY – OF)
(2) RotoCommunity.com – Colby Rasmus (StL – OF)
(3) Mark S – Michael Bourn (Hou – OF)
(4) Dannn R – Jonathan Papelbon (Bos – RP)
(5) OCCH – Kelly Johnson (Ari – 2B)
(6) Brablc – Pablo Sandoval (SF – 1B,3B)
(7) George – Jason Bay (NYM – OF)
(8) Charlie – Ben Zobrist (TB – 1B,2B,OF)
(9) Tyler – Wandy Rodríguez (Hou – SP)
(10) Josh S – Ryan Dempster (ChC – SP)
(11) Brett Talley – Chone Figgins (Sea – 2B)
(12) Santa – Delmon Young (Min – OF)

I don’t think Ben Zobrist is going to reach the heights he did back in 2009, but there is still at least some chance he approaches 20/20 in 2011. If not, at least something close will do.

Round 11
(1) Santa – Nick Markakis (Bal – OF)
(2) Brett Talley – Juan Pierre (CWS – OF)
(3) Josh S – David Ortiz (Bos – Util)
(4) Tyler – Jonathan Sánchez (SF – SP)
(5) Charlie – Jonathan Broxton (LAD – RP)
(6) George – Josh Beckett (Bos – SP)
(7) Brablc – Clay Buchholz (Bos – SP)
(8) OCCH – Mike Napoli (Tex – C,1B)
(9) Dannn R – J.J. Putz (Ari – RP)
(10) Mark S – Ricky Nolasco (Fla – SP)
(11) RotoCommunity.com – Vernon Wells (LAA – OF)
(12) Dave – Rafael Furcal (LAD – SS)

Fantasy GMs would have gone nuts last year if Broxton would have lasted until the 11th round. Relievers are a fickle species, but Broxton has the pure stuff to bounce back and regain his spot amongst the best closers in the game.

Round 12
(1) Dave – Craig Kimbrel (Atl – RP)
(2) RotoCommunity.com – Carlos Quentin (CWS – OF)
(3) Mark S – Joe Nathan (Min – RP)
(4) Dannn R – Carlos Beltrán (NYM – OF)
(5) OCCH – Rajai Davis (Tor – OF)
(6) Brablc – Ted Lilly (LAD – SP)
(7) George – Matt Garza (ChC – SP)
(8) Charlie – Matt Wieters (Bal – C)
(9) Tyler – Aubrey Huff (SF – 1B,OF)
(10) Josh S – Jeremy Hellickson (TB – SP,RP)
(11) Brett Talley – Tim Hudson (Atl – SP)
(12) Santa – Ian Desmond (Was – SS)

I had to do this. I was practically dared to. Look, I’m one of the biggest Matt Wieters believers out there, so why not! It’s only a mock.

P.S. I still think he could breakout and hit .290/25/80.

Round 13
(1) Santa – Rafael Soriano (NYY – RP)
(2) Brett Talley – José Valverde (Det – RP)
(3) Josh S – John Axford (Mil – RP)
(4) Tyler – Francisco Cordero (Cin – RP)
(5) Charlie – Vladimir Guerrero (Tex – OF)
(6) George – Andrew Bailey (Oak – RP)
(7) Brablc – Ricky Romero (Tor – SP)
(8) OCCH – Ángel Pagán (NYM – OF)
(9) Dannn R – Grady Sizemore (Cle – OF)
(10) Mark S – Carlos Peña (ChC – 1B)
(11) RotoCommunity.com – Francisco Rodríguez (NYM – RP)
(12) Dave – Matt Thornton (CWS – RP)

Vlad is eligible in the outfield and it’s about time to start filling my outfield spots. With Zobeast and Vlad, I’ve got a decent mix of power and some speed (from Zobrist at least). I’ll add more speed later.

Round 14
(1) Dave – Huston Street (Col – RP)
(2) RotoCommunity.com – Torii Hunter (LAA – OF)
(3) Mark S – Joel Hanrahan (Pit – RP)
(4) Dannn R – Bobby Abreu (LAA – OF)
(5) OCCH – Chris Pérez (Cle – RP)
(6) Brablc – Starlin Castro (ChC – SS)
(7) George – Adam Lind (Tor – 1B,OF)
(8) Charlie – Madison Bumgarner (SF – SP)
(9) Tyler – Nick Swisher (NYY – OF)
(10) Josh S – Colby Lewis (Tex – SP)
(11) Brett Talley – Brad Lidge (Phi – RP)
(12) Santa – Trevor Cahill (Oak – SP)

Took him in a real draft and I’d take him in the middle rounds in just about every draft.

Round 15
(1) Santa – Ian Stewart (Col – 3B)
(2) Brett Talley – Miguel Montero (Ari – C)
(3) Josh S – Daniel Hudson (Ari – SP)
(4) Tyler – Ryan Franklin (StL – RP)
(5) Charlie – Jhoulys Chacin (Col – SP,RP)
(6) George – Neil Walker (Pit – 2B,3B)
(7) Brablc – Drew Storen (Was – RP)
(8) OCCH – David Aardsma (Sea – RP)
(9) Dannn R – Gio González (Oak – SP)
(10) Mark S – C.J. Wilson (Tex – SP)
(11) RotoCommunity.com – Frank Francisco (Tor – RP)
(12) Dave – Chris Sale (CWS – RP)

The control issue is my only concern, but Chacin is going to rack up the strikeouts and generate good ground ball numbers. I’ll take my chances on his upside here.

Round 16
(1) Dave – Anibal Sánchez (Fla – SP)
(2) RotoCommunity.com – Jose Tabata (Pit – OF)
(3) Mark S – Magglio Ordóñez (Det – OF)
(4) Dannn R – Kevin Gregg (Bal – RP)
(5) OCCH – Brian Matusz (Bal – SP)
(6) Brablc – Brandon Lyon (Hou – RP)
(7) George – Leo Núñez (Fla – RP)
(8) Charlie – Nyjer Morgan (Was – OF)
(9) Tyler – Carlos Zambrano (ChC – SP,RP)
(10) Josh S – Koji Uehara (Bal – RP)
(11) Brett Talley – Domonic Brown (Phi – OF)
(12) Santa – Phil Hughes (NYY – SP)

There’s that extra 40 steals! 2010 was a weird year for Morgan, but if he stays in the lineup everyday he should be able to hit .280, score 70-plus runs (Ichiro scored 74 runs in 2010) and steal enough bases to hold his value here.

Round 17
(1) Santa – John Danks (CWS – SP)
(2) Brett Talley – Hiroki Kuroda (LAD – SP)
(3) Josh S – Manny Ramírez (TB – OF)
(4) Tyler – Johan Santana (NYM – SP)
(5) Charlie – Jorge De La Rosa (Col – SP)
(6) George – Jorge Posada (NYY – C)
(7) Brablc – Jaime García (StL – SP)
(8) OCCH – Howie Kendrick (LAA – 1B,2B)
(9) Dannn R – Carlos Lee (Hou – 1B,OF)
(10) Mark S – Brett Myers (Hou – SP)
(11) RotoCommunity.com – Edinson Vólquez (Cin – SP)
(12) Dave – Jonny Venters (Atl – RP)

At this point, I love NL West pitching. You can read about why I drafted JDLR in a real draft here (same like as above).

Round 18
(1) Dave – Mike Minor (Atl – SP)
(2) RotoCommunity.com – Javier Vázquez (Fla – SP,RP)
(3) Mark S – Jordan Zimmermann (Was – SP)
(4) Dannn R – Asdrubal Cabrera (Cle – SS)
(5) OCCH – Johnny Cueto (Cin – SP)
(6) Brablc – Adam Jones (Bal – OF)
(7) George – Derek Holland (Tex – SP)
(8) Charlie – Gavin Floyd (CWS – SP)
(9) Tyler – Gaby Sánchez (Fla – 1B)
(10) Josh S – Aroldis Chapman (Cin – RP)
(11) Brett Talley – Ervin Santana (LAA – SP)
(12) Santa – Kurt Suzuki (Oak – C)
More pitching depth. Floyd’s peripherals remain solid. He wont be spectacular, but I’m willing to bet he’s worth the 18th round pick here.
Round 19
(1) Santa – Travis Snider (Tor – OF)
(2) Brett Talley – Matt Capps (Min – RP)
(3) Josh S – Jake McGee (TB – RP)
(4) Tyler – Fernando Rodney (LAA – RP)
(5) Charlie – Denard Span (Min – OF)
(6) George – Evan Meek (Pit – RP)
(7) Brablc – Ian Kennedy (Ari – SP)
(8) OCCH – Ike Davis (NYM – 1B)
(9) Dannn R – Jake Peavy (CWS – SP)
(10) Mark S – Logan Morrison (Fla – OF)
(11) RotoCommunity.com – Dexter Fowler (Col – OF)
(12) Dave – Homer Bailey (Cin – SP)

This is what the three outfielder format does. There are still some real attractive outfielders on the board this late in the game.

Round 20
(1) Dave – James McDonald (Pit – SP)
(2) RotoCommunity.com – Eric Young (Col – 2B,OF)
(3) Mark S – Hong-Chih Kuo (LAD – RP)
(4) Dannn R – John Lackey (Bos – SP)
(5) OCCH – Bud Norris (Hou – SP)
(6) Brablc – Carl Pavano (Min – SP)
(7) George – Ryan Raburn (Det – 2B,OF)
(8) Charlie – Tsuyoshi Nishioka (Min – 2B,SS)
(9) Tyler – Marco Scutaro (Bos – 2B,SS)
(10) Josh S – Desmond Jennings (TB – OF)
(11) Brett Talley – Scott Baker (Min – SP)
(12) Santa – Alfonso Soriano (ChC – OF)

It’s looking more and more like I will target Nishioka late in about every draft. He has 2B/SS eligibility and the plate discipline to hit .280 or better with 30-plus stolen bases.
Round 21
(1) Santa – Derrek Lee (Bal – 1B)
(2) Brett Talley – Luke Scott (Bal – 1B,OF)
(3) Josh S – James Shields (TB – SP)
(4) Tyler – Austin Jackson (Det – OF)
(5) Charlie – Travis Wood (Cin – SP)
(6) George – Lance Berkman (StL – 1B)
(7) Brablc – Jair Jurrjens (Atl – SP)
(8) OCCH – Yunel Escobar (Tor – SS)
(9) Dannn R – J.P. Howell (TB – SP,RP)
(10) Mark S – Brandon Webb (Tex – SP)
(11) RotoCommunity.com – Wade Davis (TB – SP)
(12) Dave – Michael Cuddyer (Min – 1B,3B,OF)

Why not?

Round 22
(1) Dave – Kila Ka’aihue (KC – 1B)
(2) RotoCommunity.com – Edwin Jackson (CWS – SP)
(3) Mark S – John Jaso (TB – C)
(4) Dannn R – Coco Crisp (Oak – OF)
(5) OCCH – Jeremy Guthrie (Bal – SP)
(6) Brablc – Luke Gregerson (SD – RP)
(7) George – Jon Rauch (Tor – RP)
(8) Charlie – Dan Johnson (TB – 1B,3B)
(9) Tyler – Alex Sanabia (Fla – SP)
(10) Josh S – Dustin Ackley (Sea – OF)
(11) Brett Talley – Juan Uribe (LAD – 2B,3B,SS)
(12) Santa – Mike Aviles (KC – 2B,SS)

Did you notice that Dan Johnson is 3B eligible in standard Yahoo leagues? Don’t expect much AVG, but 25-30 homers is a real possibility.

Round 23
(1) Santa – Sean Rodriguez (TB – 2B,OF)
(2) Brett Talley – Jason Hammel (Col – SP)
(3) Josh S – Alex Gordon (KC – 3B,OF)
(4) Tyler – Kyle Farnsworth (TB – RP)
(5) Charlie – Brandon League (Sea – RP)
(6) George – Peter Bourjos (LAA – OF)
(7) Brablc – Carlos Ruiz (Phi – C)
(8) OCCH – David Murphy (Tex – OF)
(9) Dannn R – Scott Podsednik (LAD – OF)
(10) Mark S – Jed Lowrie (Bos – 2B,SS)
(11) RotoCommunity.com – J.A. Happ (Hou – SP)
(12) Dave – Kyle Drabek (Tor – SP)

I’m tired. Get me a few cheap saves will ya?

Thanks to those who we patient enough to participate in this draft after a couple failed attempts. It was a fun night.
