Final 2011 Catcher Rankings

After an offseason full of research, number crunching and player projecting, these are the final positional rankings. Catcher is actually not as shallow as I thought at first due to some emerging youngsters and a couple of veterans looking to bounce back.

1. Joe Mauer $21
2. Victor Martinez $19
3. Buster Posey $18
4. Brian McCann $17
5. Carlos Santana $15
6. Mike Napoli $10
7. Geovany Soto $8
8. Matt Wieters $7
9. Kurt Suzuki $6
10. Miguel Montero $6
11. Chris Iannetta $5
12. Jorge Posada $4
13. J.P. Arencibia $1
14. A.J. Pierzynski $1
15. Miguel Olivo $1
16. Russell Martin $1
17. Jesus Montero $1
18. Yadier Molina $1
19. John Buck $1
20. Nick Hundley $1

I went back and forth all offseason on whether to rank Posey over Santana or the other way around. After I finished my projections and calculated the dollar values, Posey came out ahead. Still, I think there at least some chance that Santana puts up better numbers this season.

My thoughts on Matt Wieters expressed through the glory of music.

I like both Kurt Suzuki and Miguel Montero as late round comeback values, but I’m going to just keep betting against the ageing Jorge Posada until he falls of the table, regardless of him being a DH now.
