Catcher’s for the Stretch Run

Looking for help at catcher for the stretch run? These three guys could lend a hand.

Jesus Montero, NYY

Monday was a great day for Montero. Not only did he hit his first career major league homer, but he hit his second career major league homer in the same game. Both were opposite field shots and both garnered a standing ovation. It seems fairly clear that Montero will get starts at DH against left-handed pitching. He hit .328/.392/.647 against lefties at triple-A, so if you’re in a league with daily lineup moves, he’s worth a look.

Nick Hundley, SD
Hundley spent a good chunk of the season on the DL after a hot start, where he hit .263 with three home runs in April. Hundley hit .389 with two homers in August, but he’s still only 10-percent owned in Yahoo leagues. He’s hitting over .500 with three home runs in the last 30 days. He has been prone to hot streaks, so ride him while you can.

Yorvit Torrealba, TEX
Despite the log-jab of catcher/1B/DH types in Texas, Torrealba has been seeing much more playing time over the last month or so and has found his groove at the plate. Over the last 30 days he’s hitting .382. Hopefully he can ride this hot streak out over a few more weeks.
