2011 FB365 League Roto Draft Review

This past Sunday, the 2011 FB365 Roto League held it’s draft. We went 26 rounds in the standard snake format; 12 teams, 5×5.

My team, Living on an Erye, picked second overall and the picks are highlighted. Rosters: C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, CI, MI, OF (4), UT, P (9).

Round 1
1. Hanley Ramírez(Fla – SS) WHIP-ping Boys
2. Albert Pujols(StL – 1B) Living on an…
3. Troy Tulowitzki(Col – SS) Guppies
4. Miguel Cabrera(Det – 1B) LosPunchados…
5. Evan Longoria(TB – 3B) Joe
6. Joey Votto(Cin – 1B) Garveyites
7. Ryan Braun(Mil – OF) Planet 10
8. Carl Crawford(Bos – OF) The Upper De…
9. Carlos González(Col – OF) Bulletproof …
10. Robinson Canó(NYY – 2B) NWO 4 LIFE
11. David Wright(NYM – 3B) Braun’s …
12. Adrián González(Bos – 1B) PBurke

Looks like position scarcity pushed Hanley over Pujols in this draft, which is fine by me, as I am able to lock up the rock-solid production of Albert Pujols.

Favorite pick: Carl Crawford
Least favorite pick: None

Round 2

1 Álex Rodríguez(NYY – 3B) PBurke
2 Ryan Howard(Phi – 1B) Braun’s …
3 Mark Teixeira(NYY – 1B) NWO 4 LIFE
4 Roy Halladay(Phi – P) Bulletproof …
5 Ryan Zimmerman(Was – 3B) The Upper De…
6 Matt Holliday(StL – OF) Planet 10
7 Dustin Pedroia(Bos – 2B) Garveyites
8 Prince Fielder(Mil – 1B) Joe
9 Josh Hamilton(Tex – OF) LosPunchados…
10 Matt Kemp(LAD – OF) Guppies
11 José Reyes(NYM – SS) Living on an…
12 Kevin Youkilis(Bos – 1B) WHIP-ping Boys

Maybe the second round isn’t ideal for Reyes, but I wasn’t sure he’d get back to me. His ADP is early round three, which is where my next pick will be anyway. This way I lock up a scarce position with a player that has good upside and is playing for a big contract in the offseason.

Favorite pick: Matt Kemp
Least favorite pick: None

Round 3

1. Nelson Cruz(Tex – OF) WHIP-ping Boys
2. Ian Kinsler(Tex – 2B) Living on an…
3. Adam Dunn(CWS – 1B) Guppies
4. Justin Morneau(Min – 1B) LosPunchados…
5. Joe Mauer(Min – C) Joe
6. Buster Posey(SF – C,1B) Garveyites
7. Dan Uggla(Atl – 2B) Planet 10
8. Félix Hernández(Sea – P) The Upper De…
9. Víctor Martínez(Det – C,1B) Bulletproof …
10. Justin Upton(Ari – OF) NWO 4 LIFE
11. Tim Lincecum(SF – P) Braun’s …
12. Shin-Soo Choo(Cle – OF) PBurke

I guess I’m embracing risk again this season. Such a strategy got me in trouble last season, but I feel much more comfortable with Reyes and Kinsler at this point of spring training than I did with Reyes last year. IF Kinsler can play 140-plus games, I think he’ll produce at a .285/25/25 clip.

Favorite pick: Justin Upton
Least favorite pick: Buster Posey

Round 4

1. Rickie Weeks(Mil – 2B) PBurke
2. Andrew McCutchen(Pit – OF) Braun’s …
3. Jason Heyward(Atl – OF) NWO 4 LIFE
4. Cliff Lee(Phi – P) Bulletproof …
5. José Bautista(Tor – 3B,OF) The Upper De…
6. Adrián Béltre(Tex – 3B) Planet 10
7. Derek Jeter(NYY – SS) Garveyites
8. Chase Utley(Phi – 2B) Joe
9. Jon Lester(Bos – P) LosPunchados…
10. Clayton Kershaw(LAD – P) Guppies
11. Brandon Phillips(Cin – 2B) Living on an…
12. Justin Verlander(Det – P) WHIP-ping Boys

I decided to double up at 2B (as well as 20/20 potential) with Brandon Phillips to fill my MI spot. Between him and Kinsler, I think I can have .280/40/40 with 170-plus R/RBI.

Favorite pick: Jon Lester
Least favorite pick: Rickie Weeks, Chase Utley, Jose Bautista

Round 5

1. Josh Johnson(Fla – P) WHIP-ping Boys
2. Jay Bruce(Cin – OF) Living on an…
3. Chris Young(Ari – OF) Guppies
4. Jacoby Ellsbury(Bos – OF) LosPunchados…
5. Andre Ethier(LAD – OF) Joe
6. Ubaldo Jiménez(Col – P) Garveyites
7. Drew Stubbs(Cin – OF) Planet 10
8. Jimmy Rollins(Phi – SS) The Upper De…
9. Ichiro Suzuki(Sea – OF) Bulletproof …
10. CC Sabathia(NYY – P) NWO 4 LIFE
11. Hunter Pence(Hou – OF) Braun’s …
12. Jayson Werth(Was – OF)

I’ve been a big believer in Bruce for the past couple of years, but a wrist injury halted his power production in 2009 and for the first half of 2010. Look at what he did about a year removed from his wrist injury and you’ll see his true potential. At full health, 2011 should be a monster year for the young slugger.

Favorite pick: Hunter Pence
Least favorite pick: Ichiro

Round 6

1. Brian McCann(Atl – C) PBurke
2. Álex Ríos(CWS – OF) Braun’s …
3. David Price(TB – P) NWO 4 LIFE
4. Mark Reynolds(Bal – 3B) Bulletproof …
5. Kendrys Morales(LAA – 1B) The Upper De…
6. Ben Zobrist(TB – 1B,2B,OF) Planet 10
7. Tommy Hanson(Atl – P) Garveyites
8. B.J. Upton(TB – OF) Joe
9. Cole Hamels(Phi – P) LosPunchados…
10. Yovani Gallardo(Mil – P) Guppies
11. Pedro Alvarez(Pit – 3B) Living on an…
12. Kelly Johnson(Ari – 2B)

This seems like a bit of a stretch for Alvarez, but the 3B market is getting thin and I had to adjust accordingly. While I have some reservations as to Alvarez’s ability to hit for AVG this season, I believe he’ll be a solid source of HR/RBI numbers at a thin position and power is something I was trying to target early and often.

Favorite pick: Tommy Hanson
Least favorite pick: Alex Rios

Round 7

1. Shane Victorino(Phi – OF) WHIP-ping Boys
2. Francisco Liriano(Min – P) Living on an…
3. Elvis Andrus(Tex – SS) Guppies
4. Alexei Ramírez(CWS – SS) LosPunchados…
5. Dan Haren(LAA – P) Joe
6. Mariano Rivera(NYY – P) Garveyites
7. Curtis Granderson(NYY – OF) Planet 10
8. Jered Weaver(LAA – P) The Upper De…
9. Mike Stanton(Fla – OF) Bulletproof …
10. Colby Rasmus(StL – OF) NWO 4 LIFE
11. Billy Butler(KC – 1B) Braun’s …
12. Zack Greinke(Mil – P) PBurke

Turns out I was able to stick to my 7/10 split strategy here, as I take my ace in round seven. In case you haven’t noticed, I love Liriano and think he is highly underestimated heading into this season.

Favorite pick: Dan Haren
Least favorite pick: Elvis Andrus

Round 8

1. Mat Latos(SD – P) PBurke
2. Carlos Mármol(ChC – P) Braun’s …
3. Casey McGehee(Mil – 3B) NWO 4 LIFE
4. Paul Konerko(CWS – 1B) Bulletproof …
5. Brian Wilson(SF – P) The Upper De…
6. Stephen Drew(Ari – SS) Planet 10
7. Martín Prado(Atl – 2B,3B) Garveyites
8. Aramis Ramírez(ChC – 3B) Joe
9. Chris Carpenter(StL – P) LosPunchados…
10. Pablo Sandoval(SF – 1B,3B) Guppies
11. Chad Billingsley(LAD – P) Living on an…
12. Nick Swisher(NYY – OF) WHIP-ping Boys

I usually follow up my first pitcher in the seventh by taking another in the eighth. I’ll take the 26-year-old Chad Billingsley and see if he can improve on his already solid standard.

Favorite pick: Aramis Ramirez/Pablo Sandoval
Least favorite pick: Paul Konerko

Round 9

1. Carlos Santana(Cle – C) WHIP-ping Boys
2. Michael Young(Tex – 3B) Living on an…
3. Francisco Rodríguez(NYM – P) Guppies
4. Matt Cain(SF – P) LosPunchados…
5. Max Scherzer(Det – P) Joe
6. Jonathan Papelbon(Bos – P) Garveyites
7. Aaron Hill(Tor – 2B) Planet 10
8. Heath Bell(SD – P) The Upper De…
9. Joakim Soria(KC – P) Bulletproof …
10. José Valverde(Det – P) NWO 4 LIFE
11. Neftali Feliz(Tex – P) Braun’s …
12. Tim Hudson(Atl – P) PBurke

At this point, I think Young becomes a value, no matter what his situation is like in Texas. He’ll get the at-bats (or should) and even a regression will result in solid numbers. He slots in at CI for me.

Favorite pick: Lots (Hill, Soria, Bell, Scherzer, Santana)
Least favorite pick: Tim Hudson

Round 10

1. Jason Bay(NYM – OF) PBurke
2. Delmon Young(Min – OF) Braun’s …
3. Roy Oswalt(Phi – P) NWO 4 LIFE
4. Adam Lind(Tor – 1B,OF) Bulletproof …
5. Gordon Beckham(CWS – 2B) The Upper De…
6. Shaun Marcum(Mil – P) Planet 10
7. Torii Hunter(LAA – OF) Garveyites
8. Brett Anderson(Oak – P) Joe
9. Brian Roberts(Bal – 2B) LosPunchados…
10. Huston Street(Col – P) Guppies
11. Joe Nathan(Min – P) Living on an…
12. Ted Lilly(LAD – P) WHIP-ping Boys

Executing the 7/10 split plan to a tee, I grab my first closer in round 10. I’m 100% convinced that Nathan will be as good as he has been in the past. The fastball already looks good, sitting in the low 90’s.

Favorite pick: Adam Lind
Least favorite pick: Delmon Young (Roberts is a little risky here as well)

Round 11

1. Wandy Rodríguez(Hou – P) WHIP-ping Boys
2. Nick Markakis(Bal – OF) Living on an…
3. Matt Thornton(CWS – P) Guppies
4. Craig Kimbrel(Atl – P) LosPunchados…
5. Jonathan Broxton(LAD – P) Joe
6. Bobby Abreu(LAA – OF) Garveyites
7. Brandon Morrow(Tor – P) Planet 10
8. Geovany Soto(ChC – C) The Upper De…
9. Gio González(Oak – P) Bulletproof …
10. Kevin Gregg(Bal – P) NWO 4 LIFE
11. Corey Hart(Mil – OF) Braun’s …
12. Mike Napoli(Tex – C,1B) PBurke

I’m not really crazy about Nick Markakis, but then again, he has at least some upside and has been as consistent as they come in terms of AVG. In the middle of an improved Baltimore lineup, he could be a big value in round 11.

Favorite pick: Bobby Abreu
Least favorite pick: Gio Gonzalez (I like his upside, but not this early)

Round 12

1. Matt Garza(ChC – P) PBurke
2. Rafael Furcal(LAD – SS) Braun’s …
3. Adam Jones(Bal – OF) NWO 4 LIFE
4. Starlin Castro(ChC – SS) Bulletproof …
5. Brett Gardner(NYY – OF) The Upper De…
6. John Axford(Mil – P) Planet 10
7. Brad Lidge(Phi – P) Garveyites
8. Ian Desmond(Was – SS) Joe
9. Chris Pérez(Cle – P) LosPunchados…
10. Leo Núñez(Fla – P) Guppies
11. J.J. Putz(Ari – P) Living on an…
12. Francisco Cordero(Cin – P) WHIP-ping Boys

My #2 closer will be J.J. Putz, who is looking fine after some back stiffness and could put up 1.b closer-type numbers as the full time closer in Arizona.

Favorite pick: Chris Perez
Least favorite pick: Brad Lidge (with Perez still on the board)

Round 13

1. Joel Hanrahan(Pit – P) WHIP-ping Boys
2. Colby Lewis(Tex – P) Living on an…
3. Hiroki Kuroda(LAD – P) Guppies
4. David Ortiz(Bos – Util) LosPunchados…
5. Vladimir Guerrero(Bal – OF) Joe
6. Madison Bumgarner(SF – P) Garveyites
7. Daniel Hudson(Ari – P) Planet 10
8. Carlos Lee(Hou – 1B,OF) The Upper De…
9. Chone Figgins(Sea – 2B) Bulletproof …
10. Carlos Peña(ChC – 1B) NWO 4 LIFE
11. Matt Wieters(Bal – C) Braun’s …
12. Michael Bourn(Hou – OF) PBurke

Pretty sure I have Colby Lewis on just about every team this season due to his round value ($$ value in auctions). I think he can take another step forward with his command to go along with very solid strikeout rates.

Favorite pick: Madison Bumgarner and, of course, Matt Wieters!!!
Least favorite pick: David Ortiz

Round 14

1. Ryan Franklin(StL – P) PBurke
2. Neil Walker(Pit – 2B,3B) Braun’s …
3. Clay Buchholz(Bos – P) NWO 4 LIFE
4. Brandon Lyon(Hou – P) Bulletproof …
5. Andrew Bailey(Oak – P) The Upper De…
6. Drew Storen(Was – P) Planet 10
7. Ricky Romero(Tor – P) Garveyites
8. Grady Sizemore(Cle – OF) Joe
9. Jonathan Sánchez(SF – P) LosPunchados…
10. Tsuyoshi Nishioka(Min – 2B,SS) Guppies
11. Rajai Davis(Tor – OF) Living on an…
12. Carlos Quentin(CWS – OF) WHIP-ping Boys

I have some solid SB threats to this point, but I wanted one more big one to put me over the top. Rajai Davis does so, as he should play everyday in Toronto and bat leadoff in front of a powerful lineup.

Favorite pick: Tsuyoshi Nishioka
Least favorite pick: Grady Sizemore

Round 15

1. Manny Ramírez(TB – OF) WHIP-ping Boys
2. Miguel Montero(Ari – C) Living on an…
3. Ryan Raburn(Det – 2B,OF) Guppies
4. Michael Cuddyer(Min – 1B,3B,OF) LosPunchados…
5. Ángel Pagán(NYM – OF) Joe
6. Adam LaRoche(Was – 1B) Garveyites
7. Jake McGee(TB – P) Planet 10
8. Juan Pierre(CWS – OF) The Upper De…
9. Mike Aviles(KC – 2B,SS) Bulletproof …
10. Vernon Wells(LAA – OF) NWO 4 LIFE
11. Ryan Dempster(ChC – P) Braun’s …
12. David Aardsma(Sea – P) PBurke

I need a catcher and am happy to see Miguel Montero still available. While I don’t think he’ll match his 2009 breakout pace, he’s still a solid bet for a .280-ish AVg and 15 or so homers.

Favorite pick: Manny Ramirez (Today we spell redemption: M-A-N-N-Y). Also Angel Pagan and Mike Aviles
Least favorite pick: Adam LaRoche

Round 16

1. Phil Hughes(NYY – P) PBurke
2. Howie Kendrick(LAA – 1B,2B) Braun’s …
3. Brian Matusz(Bal – P) NWO 4 LIFE
4. Edinson Vólquez(Cin – P) Bulletproof …
5. Frank Francisco(Tor – P) The Upper De…
6. John Danks(CWS – P) Planet 10
7. R.A. Dickey(NYM – P) Garveyites
8. Aroldis Chapman(Cin – P) Joe
9. Aubrey Huff(SF – 1B,OF) LosPunchados…
10. Travis Snider(Tor – OF) Guppies
11. Jhoulys Chacin(Col – P) Living on an…
12. Gaby Sánchez(Fla – 1B) WHIP-ping Boys

I’ve targeted Jhoulys in every draft and I think he could prove an exceptional value in round 16.

Favorite pick: Phil Hughes, Edinson Volquez
Least favorite pick: Travis Snider (though I think it’s a fine flier pick, just not convinced his breakout will come in 2011)

Round 17

1. Alexi Ogando(Tex – P) WHIP-ping Boys
2. Edwin Encarnación(Tor – 3B) Living on an…
3. Josh Beckett(Bos – P) Guppies

6. Raúl Ibañez(Phi – OF) Garveyites
7. Ian Kennedy(Ari – P) Planet 10
8. Jose Tabata(Pit – OF) The Upper De…
9. Jonny Venters(Atl – P) Bulletproof …
10. Jeremy Hellickson(TB – P) NWO 4 LIFE
11. Ricky Nolasco(Fla – P) Braun’s …
12. Brett Myers(Hou – P) PBurke

EDH!!! .265 AVG, 35 bombs…mark it!!

Favorite pick: Josh Beckett, Jeremy Hellickson, Hot Nolasco Sauce
Least favorite pick: Raul Ibanez, maybe, but it’s not all that bad of a pick at this point

Round 18

1. Cliff Pennington(Oak – SS) PBurke
2. Jordan Zimmermann(Was – P) Braun’s …
3. Alcides Escobar(KC – SS) NWO 4 LIFE
4. Jorge De La Rosa(Col – P) Bulletproof …

7. Trevor Cahill(Oak – P) Garveyites
8. Plácido Polanco(Phi – 2B,3B) Joe
9. C.J. Wilson(Tex – P) LosPunchados…
10. Ike Davis(NYM – 1B) Guppies
11. Seth Smith(Col – OF) Living on an…
12. Jake Peavy(CWS – P) WHIP-ping Boys

I seem to be hitting on a lot of my draft day targets in these later rounds. Seth Smith + Everyday Job = Awesomeness

Favorite pick: Pitching…
Least favorite pick: …except for Jaime Garcia

Round 19

1. Luke Scott(Bal – 1B,OF) WHIP-ping Boys
2. Denard Span(Min – OF) Living on an…
3. Ian Stewart(Col – 3B) Guppies
4. Magglio Ordóñez(Det – OF) LosPunchados…

7. Jorge Posada(NYY – C) Planet 10
8. Ty Wigginton(Col – 1B,2B,3B) The Upper De…
9. Peter Bourjos(LAA – OF) Bulletproof …
10. Rafael Soriano(NYY – P) NWO 4 LIFE
11. Yunel Escobar(Tor – SS) Braun’s …
12. Carlos Beltrán(NYM – OF) PBurke

One bad season makes Span a 19th rounder? I’ll take him here as a bench player and be happy when he hits .290 with 25 steals and 90-100 runs scored.

Favorite pick: Yunel Escobar
Least favorite pick: Anibal Sanchez

Round 20

1. Austin Jackson(Det – OF) PBurke
2. Luke Gregerson(SD – P) Braun’s …

8. Ervin Santana(LAA – P) Joe
9. Coco Crisp(Oak – OF) LosPunchados…
10. Scott Baker(Min – P) Guppies
11. Brian Fuentes(Oak – P) Living on an…
12. Brandon League(Sea – P)

Just looking for a flier here that could give me some cheap saves.

Favorite pick: Logan Morrison
Least favorite pick: Austin Jackson

Round 21

1. Koji Uehara(Bal – P) WHIP-ping Boys
2. Nate McLouth(Atl – OF) Living on an…

9. Hong-Chih Kuo(LAD – P) Bulletproof …
10. Marlon Byrd(ChC – OF) NWO 4 LIFE
11. James Shields(TB – P) Braun’s …
12. Jhonny Peralta(Det – 3B,SS) PBurke

He’s looking good this spring, but more than anything is the fact that he still has 20/20 potential, which would be a great find in round 21.

Favorite pick: Justin Smoak, James Shields
Least favorite pick: Chris Johnson

Round 22

1. Daniel Bard(Bos – P) PBurke
2. Tim Stauffer(SD – P) Braun’s …
3. Nyjer Morgan(Was – OF) NWO 4 LIFE
4. Bud Norris(Hou – P) Bulletproof …

9. Kurt Suzuki(Oak – C) LosPunchados…
10. Derek Holland(Tex – P) Guppies
11. Alex Gordon(KC – 3B,OF) Living on an…
12. Gavin Floyd(CWS – P) WHIP-ping Boys

No more ways to send Gordon to triple-A + no more preasure of trying to fit George Brett’s shoes could = decent numbers for a 3B eligible bat.

Favorite pick: Bud Norris
Least favorite pick: James Loney

Round 23

1. Kyle Farnsworth(TB – P) WHIP-ping Boys
2. Erik Bedard(Sea – P) Living on an…

11. Derrek Lee(Bal – 1B) Braun’s …
12. Bronson Arroyo(Cin – P) PBurke

Bedard is healthy, so far, and at this point I’ll be happy with 10-15 awesome starts out fo the gates.

Favorite pick: Asdrubal Cabrera
Least favorite pick: Kyle Farnsworth (only because I think the guy is a doo-doo head)

Round 24

1. Miguel Tejada(SF – 3B,SS) PBurke

10. Chris Capuano(NYM – P) Guppies
11. Dan Johnson(TB – 1B,3B) Living on an…
12. Chase Headley(SD – 3B) WHIP-ping Boys

If I can get 25-plus homers out of a 3B in round 24, I’ll be exstatic.

Favorite pick: Jason Bartlett, Mike Morse, Kila Monster, Chase Headley
Least favorite pick: David Freese

Round 25

1. Alberto Callaspo(LAA – 2B,3B) WHIP-ping Boys
2. Omar Infante(Fla – 2B,3B,SS,OF) Living on an…

10. James McDonald(Pit – P) NWO 4 LIFE
11. David Murphy(Tex – OF) Braun’s …
12. Josh Willingham(Oak – OF) PBurke

Just looking to add depth here. Infante should hit for AVG and score a good number of runs hitting up in the Marlins lineup. He’s 2B,3B,SS and OF eligible.

Favorite pick: Chris Iannetta
Least favorite pick: Johan Santana

Round 26

1. Chris Young(NYM – P) PBurke
2. Matt Capps(Min – P) Braun’s …
3. Brandon Webb(Tex – P) NWO 4 LIFE

10. Jon Rauch(Tor – P) Guppies
11. Wade Davis(TB – P) Living on an…
12. Jonathon Niese(NYM – P) WHIP-ping Boys

I think Wade Davis can take a step forward in 2011, so at this point, taking a flier can’t hurt.

Favorite pick: Jonathan Niese
Least favorite pick: Whatever. They’re just last round picks.
