Matt Capps has done a fine job this season closing out games for the Washington Nationals. Not only was it somewhat of a surprise bounce back season, but it made for a huge fantasy value for owners able to snag him on the cheap.
Now, a deal is reported as done and Capps is a member of the Minnesota Twins.
Jon Rauch owners don't panic just yet. Despite some rough patches, Rauch has done a fair job all season long for the Twins and I don't think that it is in Ron Gardenhire's nature to switch things up while his team is vying for a playoff spot.
Capps may get a a few saves here and there when Rauch needs a night off, so he's worth an add in AL-only leagues, but for the most part he should be mixed league waiver fodder. However, stay tuned on whatever news comes out of Minnesota. You never know what might happen.*
*And it did, apparently. La Velle Neal III of the Star Tribune tweets that Capps will close and Rauch will set up.
For the Nationals, the future is now. Drew Storen, drafted in the first round along with Stephen Strasburg, has been working eighth inning duties of late and should take over the closer's role. For a team that isn't going anywhere this season, this is a perfect chance to get Storen some experience in the ninth inning. This news is great for keeper leagues, who know now that Storen should be the closer next season no matter what.
The prospect heading to Washington is catcher Wilson Ramos. Ramos is very good defensively, but has struggled offensively this season and does not come with the best plate discipline. If the Nats give him some playing time this season he could be an NL-only factor, but mixed leagues can hold of until he proves he can hit consistently at the big league level.
Ramos now gives the Nats two very good catching prospects. 2007 fourth round pick Derek Norris is an on base machine with natural power that should develop even further as he progresses.
