Draft Review: FB365 League

This past Tuesday was the inaugural Fantasy Baseball 365 League draft. The league consists of 12 teams including myself and FB365 readers.
Our rosters consist of: C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, CI, MI, OF (4), UT, P(9) and BN (5). Below are the results of the draft with my commentary below. My picks are bold and italicized.
Round 1
1. Albert Pujols Seeking Relief
2. Hanley Ramírez Piranhas
3. Ryan Braun Braun’s …
4. Álex Rodríguez FB365
5. Chase Utley Shallow Be T…
6. Matt Kemp DONT HASSLE …
7. Joe Mauer PBurke
8. Evan Longoria Schwetty Wei…
9. Mark Teixeira Babe Ruthless
10. Ryan Howard LosPunchados…
11. Prince Fielder Rolen on int…
12. Miguel Cabrera Strictly Bus…

My pick was a fairly easy one here. I get the top third baseman at a thin position and someone who could battle both Pujols and Hanley for number one value.

Best pick: The more I look at it the more I like Snagging Evan Longoria in the first round. Third base is much thinner than first base where value can be had several rounds later.

Worst pick: Joe Mauer. Only because he’s not sure thing. If he goes out and hits .333 with 30 home runs 100 runs and 100 RBI, then the pick will have been worth it. However, if the power slips or Mauer gets injured (as has happened plenty in his past), this could be a huge bust.
Round 2
1. Ian Kinsler Strictly Bus…
2. David Wright Rolen on int…
3. Tim Lincecum LosPunchados…
4. Troy Tulowitzki Babe Ruthless
5. Justin Upton Schwetty Wei…
6. Matt Holliday PBurke
7. Dustin Pedroia DONT HASSLE …
8. Adrián González Shallow Be T…
9. Carl Crawford FB365
10. Roy Halladay Braun’s …
11. Joey Votto Piranhas
12. Zack Greinke Seeking Relief

I would have loved to see Tulow or Upton here, but instead I snag Carl Crawford for some stolen bases and runs with a little power.

Best pick: Nothing really stands out to me here as this was fairly similar to ADP reports.

Worst pick: It could be Dustin Pedroia, then again he could earn that value with a “bounce back” season.

Round 3
1. Félix Hernández Seeking Relief
2. Ryan Zimmerman Piranhas
3. Grady Sizemore Braun’s …
4. José Reyes FB365
5. Jimmy Rollins Shallow Be T…
6. Pablo Sandoval DONT HASSLE …
7. Robinson Canó PBurke
8. Mark Reynolds Schwetty Wei…
9. Jacoby Ellsbury Babe Ruthless
10. Ichiro Suzuki LosPunchados…
11. Jason Bay Rolen on int…
12. Jayson Werth Strictly Bus…

Some people might see this pick as very risky. Based on my knowledge of his medical situation Jose Reyes should be good to go for the 2010 season. His thyroid condition is something that is very treatable and his hamstring issues from last season have not been present this spring. If he stays healthy in 2010 I could be getting first round value here in the third round.

Best pick: Jacoby Ellsbury is going to steal a ton of bases, score a ton of runs and has a good chance to improve his AVG and power numbers slightly.

Worst pick:There is just too much risk in Mark Reynolds for me to see him as a third round value.

Round 4
1. Nelson Cruz Strictly Bus…
2. Dan Haren Rolen on int…
3. Ben Zobrist LosPunchados…
4. Kevin Youkilis Babe Ruthless
5. Brandon Phillips Schwetty Wei…
6. Kendry Morales PBurke
7. Víctor Martínez DONT HASSLE …
8. Derek Jeter Shallow Be T…
9. Aramis Ramírez FB365
10. Brian McCann Braun’s …
11. B.J. Upton Piranhas
12. Justin Morneau Seeking Relief

Third base is thin, we roster acorner infield spot and Aramis Ramirezassures that my team will be strongat 3B/CI.

Bestpick:Ben Zobrist can be used at 2B/SS/OF in our league so even a regression in numbers would give him plenty of value.

Worst pick: I have been burned byB.J. Upton for twostraight seasons. I get the upside, I really do, but there are so many good outfielder that will go off the board in the next several rounds.

Round 5
1. CC Sabathia Seeking Relief
2. Justin Verlander Piranhas
3. Brian Roberts Braun’s …
4. Aaron Hill FB365
5. Adam Lind Shallow Be T…
6. Nick Markakis DONT HASSLE …
7. Adam Dunn PBurke
8. Shin-Soo Choo Schwetty Wei…
9. Jon Lester Babe Ruthless
10. Yovani Gallardo LosPunchados…
11. Joakim Soria Rolen on int…
12. Jonathan Broxton Strictly Bus…

While I think Aaron Hill is in line for a regression in power, a round five pick eases any concerns. The top second basemen are already off the board.

Best pick: Aaron Hill?

Worst pick: Brian Roberts back is a big question mark. I also am not crazy about Adam Dunn given his .267 last season AVG was by way of the highest BABIP of his career.
Round 6
1. Mariano Rivera Strictly Bus…
2. Carlos Beltrán Rolen on int…
3. Chone Figgins LosPunchados…
4. Adam Wainwright Babe Ruthless
5. Josh Johnson Schwetty Wei…
6. Josh Hamilton PBurke
7. Ubaldo Jiménez DONT HASSLE …
8. Johan Santana Shallow Be T…
9. Curtis Granderson FB365
10. Chris Carpenter Braun’s …
11. Cole Hamels Piranhas
12. Jason Bartlett Seeking Relief

Yes I am worried about Granderson not hitting for a high enough AVG, but his power numbers should thrive in Yankee Stadium to go along with 20 or so stolen bases.

Best pick: Chone Figgins has a chance to be a real nice value as he will gain second base eligibility soon.

Worst pick:Carlos Beltran in round six!!!??? Dave!!! WHHHYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!

Round 7
1. Gordon Beckham Seeking Relief
2. Andre Ethier Piranhas
3. Billy Butler Braun’s …
4. Ricky Nolasco FB365
5. Bobby Abreu Shallow Be T…
6. Clayton Kershaw DONT HASSLE …
7. Tommy Hanson PBurke
8. Cliff Lee Schwetty Wei…
9. Matt Wieters Babe Ruthless
10. Manny Ramírez LosPunchados…
11. Jay Bruce Rolen on int…
12. Ian Stewart Strictly Bus…

There was a little run on pitchers, but I am sticking to my 7/10 split strategy here. I don’t about you, but I spell ace N-O-L-A-S-C-O.

Best pick: I like Billy Butler as a value pick since all of the other top first basemen were taken in the first few rounds.

Worst pick: Nothing here really looks that bad, but I’m not a huge fan of Bobby Abreu as he enters his age 36 season.

Round 8
1. Derrek Lee Strictly Bus…
2. Chipper Jones Rolen on int…
3. Carlos Peña LosPunchados…
4. Raúl Ibañez Babe Ruthless
5. Jonathan Papelbon Schwetty Wei…
6. Carlos Lee PBurke
7. Torii Hunter DONT HASSLE …
8. Michael Young Shallow Be T…
9. Carlos Quentin FB365
10. Shane Victorino Braun’s …
11. Elvis Andrus Piranhas
12. Adam Jones Seeking Relief

I’ll be looking for speed later in the draft so I grab a big power threat here in Carlos Quentin, who looks like one of the last big power threats in the outfield (or at any position for that matter).

Best pick: ?

Worst pick: Torii Hunter was aided by a .330 BABIP last season and after his eight home runs in April hedidn’t hit more than five in any other month. He’ll be 34/35 this season and there are still a lot of more attractive outfield options on the board.

Round 9
1. Andrew McCutchen Seeking Relief
2. Álex Ríos Piranhas
3. Alexei Ramírez Braun’s …
4. Josh Beckett FB365
5. Wandy Rodríguez Shallow Be T…
6. Dan Uggla DONT HASSLE …
7. Javier Vázquez PBurke
8. Michael Cuddyer Schwetty Wei…
9. Scott Baker Babe Ruthless
10. Carlos González LosPunchados…
11. Heath Bell Rolen on int…
12. Chad Billingsley Strictly Bus…

Beckett ran into one heck of a rough stretch late last season. Outside of that he was quite dominant for most of 2009. You know what they say about contract years…

Best pick: I like the first three picks in this round.

Worst pick:At age 30, Michael Cuddyer had his career year and even at that he only hit .276. He has been inconsistent with his production and health most of his career.
Round 10
1. Matt Garza Strictly Bus…
2. Asdrubal Cabrera Rolen on int…
3. Jake Peavy LosPunchados…
4. Howie Kendrick Babe Ruthless
5. Hunter Pence Schwetty Wei…
6. Matt Cain PBurke
7. Yunel Escobar DONT HASSLE …
8. Denard Span Shallow Be T…
9. Lance Berkman FB365
10. Rickie Weeks Braun’s …
11. José Valverde Piranhas
12. Miguel Montero Seeking Relief

Despite not being a huge proponent of drafting Berkman and knowing that he has already had knee problems this spring, I need a first baseman and round ten could represent good value for Berkman even if he isn’t the player he used to be.

Best pick: Berkman?

Worst pick: I’m not a big fan of drafting Howie Kendrick or Rickie Weeks this early.

Round 11
1. Chris Davis Seeking Relief
2. Brian Wilson Piranhas
3. Trevor Hoffman Braun’s …
4. Carlos Mármol FB365
5. Francisco Rodríguez Shallow Be T…
6. Jered Weaver DONT HASSLE …
7. Huston Street PBurke
8. Jason Kubel Schwetty Wei…
9. Frank Francisco Babe Ruthless
10. Brett Anderson LosPunchados…
11. Mike Napoli Rolen on int…
12. Adrián Béltre Strictly Bus…

I was able to hold off one round and extend my 7/10 split strategy to 7/11. Carlos Marmol has his control issues, but I’ll take his top-end strikeout ability anyday at this point in the draft.

Best pick: Brett Anderson has a good chance to equal or better a round 11 pick.

Worst pick: This could easily be Chris Davis who has 17 strikeouts to only three walks this spring, which is good for the third most strikeouts of any player this spring.
Round 12
1.
Strictly Bus…
2.
Rolen on int…
3.
LosPunchados…
4.
Babe Ruthless
5.
Schwetty Wei…
6.
PBurke
7.
DONT HASSLE …
8.
Shallow Be T…
9.
FB365
10.
Braun’s …
11.
Piranhas
12.
Seeking Relief

I am on the Liriano wagon for sure. His command seems to be back and his strikeouts were still very good last season. He has a chance to match any pitcher taken this round with the upside for much more.

Best pick: Andre Bailey and Rafael Soriano should be very good values here. I also like the picks of Gavin Floyd and Jose Lopez (Lopez will have 2B/3B elegibility in 2010).

Worst pick: I just don’t get all the love fo A.J. Burnett.
Round 13
1. Vladimir Guerrero Seeking Relief
2. Julio Borbón Piranhas
3. John Lackey Braun’s …
4. Brad Hawpe FB365
5. Max Scherzer Shallow Be T…
6. Billy Wagner DONT HASSLE …
7. John Danks PBurke
8. Brian Fuentes Schwetty Wei…
9. Adam LaRoche Babe Ruthless
10. Brandon Webb LosPunchados…
11. Jonathan Sánchez Rolen on int…
12. Kevin Slowey Strictly Bus…

Brad Hawpe is by no means spectacular, but he hits in the middle of a good lineup and has been consistent over the past couple seasons.

Best pick: I like the value on Borbon here as I’ve seen him go in rounds 9-10 in a couple other drafts. I’m also a fan of Max Scherzer this season. John Lackey seems to be a good value if he can stay healthy, but I have some reservationsabout him this season.

Worst pick: I’m thinking maybe Vlad Guererro is going to frustrate owners in 2010 due to his DH-only eligibility, but I see the upside.
Round 14
1. Hiroki Kuroda Strictly Bus…
2. Everth Cabrera Rolen on int…
3. Jorge Cantú LosPunchados…
4. Johnny Damon Babe Ruthless
5. Marco Scutaro Schwetty Wei…
6. David Ortiz PBurke
7. James Shields DONT HASSLE …
8. Geovany Soto Shallow Be T…
9. Stephen Drew FB365
10. Neftali Feliz Braun’s …
11. Nick Swisher Piranhas
12. Ryan Ludwick Seeking Relief

The middle infield market is starting to get a bit thin and I think Stephen Drew could provide tremendous value here as my middle infielder, especially if he bats leadoff for the D-Backs.

Best pick: I think Stephen Drew will prove to be a steal here. I also like Geovany Soto at this point.

Worst pick:Johnny Damon has already said he won’t be swinging for the fence as much in Detroit. At his age his speed is not what it used to be either. He could be a major bust in 2010.
Round 15
1. Rafael Furcal Seeking Relief
2. Mike González Piranhas
3. Nyjer Morgan Braun’s …
4. Juan Pierre FB365
5. Jair Jurrjens Shallow Be T…
6. Rajai Davis DONT HASSLE …
7. Nolan Reimold PBurke
8. Jorge Posada Schwetty Wei…
9. Brett Gardner Babe Ruthless
10. Jason Heyward LosPunchados…
11. Michael Bourn Rolen on int…
12. Ryan Madson Strictly Bus…

At this point I am happy to grab a 40-50 stolen base threat in Juan Pierre.

Best pick: Along with Pierre, Nyjer Morgan has 40-50 stolen base potential at a great round value. Rajai Davis could surpass both in steals if he can stay healthy, which he is working on this spring.

Good value:I’ve seen Jayson Heyward go as early asd round 10, but round 15 seems perfect to take a flier on his upside.

Worst pick: With his league average K/BB rate, Jair Jurrjens could easliy post a ERA of over 4.00.

Round 16
1. Tim Hudson Strictly Bus…
2. Stephen Strasburg Rolen on int…
3. Leo Núñez LosPunchados…
4. Aaron Harang Babe Ruthless
5. Roy Oswalt Schwetty Wei…
6. Johnny Cueto PBurke
7. James Loney DONT HASSLE …
8. David Price Shallow Be T…
9. David Aardsma FB365
10. Ryan Franklin Braun’s …
11. Colby Lewis Piranhas
12. Daisuke Matsuzaka Seeking Relief

My first cringe pick of the draft. I needed a second closer and Aardsma is healthy with a closing job. Believe me when I tell you I will be watching his situation (and walk rate) like a hawk early on.

Best pick:I like the flier on Aaron Harang, Stephen Strasburgh and Colby Lewis here.

Worst pick: None.
Round 17
1. Scott Kazmir Seeking Relief
2. Joe Blanton Piranhas
3. Edwin Jackson Braun’s …
4. Ryan Doumit FB365
5. Matt Thornton Shallow Be T…
6. Chris Coghlan DONT HASSLE …
7. Brad Lidge PBurke
8. Alcides Escobar Schwetty Wei…
9. Martín Prado Babe Ruthless
10. Rich Harden LosPunchados…
11. Garrett Jones Rolen on int…
12. Ryan Theriot Strictly Bus…

In round 17 Ryan Doumit could provide huge value. He is healthy and ready to bounce back as a key hitter in the middle of the Pirates order.

Best pick: Alcides Escobar can steal 30-40 basesand be a more valuable shortstop option than Everth Cabrera, who was taken three rounds earlier.

Worst pick: Witha post all-star ERA of over 5.00 last season and a very inconsistent track record, Edwin Jackson could be a dissapointing pitcher in 2010.

Round 18
1. Franklin Gutiérrez Strictly Bus…
2. Homer Bailey Rolen on int…
3. Miguel Tejada LosPunchados…
4. Juan Rivera Babe Ruthless
5. Vernon Wells Schwetty Wei…
6. Kyle Blanks PBurke
7. Carlos Zambrano DONT HASSLE …
8. Justin Duchscherer Shallow Be T…
9. Erik Bedard FB365
10. Corey Hart Braun’s …
11. Clint Barmes Piranhas
12. Alfonso Soriano Seeking Relief

At this point in the draft Erik Bedard represents upside for 15 or so starts. He’ll be a DL stash early and an easy cut should I need the DL space.

Best pick: Franklin Gutierrez has some real nice upside for an 18th round pick.

Worst pick:None.
Round 19
1. Rick Porcello Seeking Relief
2. Paul Konerko Piranhas
3. Ervin Santana Braun’s …
4. Magglio Ordóñez FB365
5. Jason Frasor Shallow Be T…
6. Matt Capps DONT HASSLE …
7. Nick Johnson PBurke
8. Chris Pérez Schwetty Wei…
9. Ted Lilly Babe Ruthless
10. Mat Latos LosPunchados…
11. Kelly Johnson Rolen on int…
12. Dexter Fowler Strictly Bus…

I have selected Magglio Ordonez late in a few drafts now. While he may not hit for much power anymore, he is a proven .300 hitter and should drive in a good amount of runs hitting once again in the middle of Detroit’s lineup.

Best pick: I love the picks of Nick Johnson, Dexter Fowler, Mat Latos and (as it turned out) Jason Frasor.

Worst pick: None.
Round 20
1. Clay Buchholz Strictly Bus…
2. Ben Sheets Rolen on int…
3. Matt Guerrier LosPunchados…
4. Erick Aybar Babe Ruthless
5. Kevin Correia Schwetty Wei…
6. Colby Rasmus PBurke
7. Russell Martin DONT HASSLE …
8. Octavio Dotel Shallow Be T…
9. Lastings Milledge FB365
10. Alex Gordon Braun’s …
11. Derek Lowe Piranhas
12. Jeff Niemann Seeking Relief

Everyone loved Lastings Milledge as a sleeper last season, but an early season slump sent him to the minors. Wrist injuries sapped much of his power as well, but a healthy Millegde in 2010 could provide great value as a 15/20 guy this late in the draft.

Notes:I also very much like the upside play in Colby Rasmus.
Round 21
1. Scott Sizemore Seeking Relief
2. Phil Hughes Piranhas
3. Pedro Alvarez Braun’s …
4. J.J. Hardy FB365
5. Matt Lindstrom Shallow Be T…
6. Brian Matusz DONT HASSLE …
7. Brandon Wood PBurke
8. Mark DeRosa Schwetty Wei…
9. Jhonny Peralta Babe Ruthless
10. Todd Helton LosPunchados…
11. Felipe Paulino Rolen on int…
12. Kurt Suzuki Strictly Bus…

At this point I’ll take a flier on J.J. Hardy to give my team some depth with hopes of a bounce back season.

Notes:I like theupside play in Scott Sizemore for a 15/15 season at second base, as long as his ankle holds up.

Round 22
1.

12.
Seeking Relief

Continuing on with some upside picks, I select Toronto’s opening day starter Shaun Marcum, who displayed above average strikeout ability and good command before missing most of 2009 with arm surgery.

Notes: Drew Stubbs could be the steal of this round with his 15/40 potential.

Round 23
1. Ryan Rowland-Smith Seeking Relief
2. Justin Masterson Piranhas
3. Mark Buehrle Braun’s …
4. Kerry Wood FB365
5. Chris Young Shallow Be T…
6. Jon Rauch DONT HASSLE …
7. Hideki Matsui PBurke
8. Bronson Arroyo Schwetty Wei…
9. Alfredo Aceves Babe Ruthless
10. Orlando Cabrera LosPunchados…
11. Scott Rolen Rolen on int…
12. Plácido Polanco Strictly Bus…

Wood will start the season on my DL, but I am hoping he’ll be a cheap source of 20 or so saves once he returns.

Round 24
1. Mike Adams Strictly Bus…
2. Chris Iannetta Rolen on int…
3. Daniel Bard LosPunchados…
4. Bengie Molina Babe Ruthless
5. Scott Feldman Schwetty Wei…
6. Brad Penny PBurke
7. Aroldis Chapman DONT HASSLE …
8. Kevin Kouzmanoff Shallow Be T…
9. Delmon Young FB365
10. J.A. Happ Braun’s …
11. Edwin Encarnación Piranhas
12. Jermaine Dye Seeking Relief

Delmon Young reported to camp “In the best shape of his career”. While I don’t put a ton of stock into that, I am hoping that he brings the plate approach that helped him hit .340/.346/.544 with four home runs and a .204 ISO in September of last season.

Round 25
1. Mike Lowell Seeking Relief
2. Jeff Clement Piranhas
3. Casey McGehee Braun’s …
4. Franklin Morales FB365
5. Conor Jackson Shallow Be T…
6. Andy Pettitte DONT HASSLE …
7. Casey Blake PBurke
8. Travis Snider Schwetty Wei…
9. Yadier Molina Babe Ruthless
10. A.J. Pierzynski LosPunchados…
11. Derek Holland Rolen on int…
12. Luke Gregerson Strictly Bus…

Franklin Morales…cheap saves.
Round 26
1. Michael Wuertz Strictly Bus…
2. Matt Diaz Rolen on int…
3. Kevin Gregg LosPunchados…
4. David DeJesús Babe Ruthless
5. Jason Hammel Schwetty Wei…
6. Fausto Carmona PBurke
7. Austin Jackson DONT HASSLE …
8. Jeff Francoeur Shallow Be T…
9. Ian Desmond FB365
10. Marc Rzepczynski Braun’s …
11. Chris Getz Piranhas
12. Buster Posey Seeking Relief

This could prove to be a huge valuefor depth at shortstop and second if Ian Desmond wins the starting shortstop job for the Nationals. He has potential for 10-15 home runs and 20-plus stolen bases over a full season.
